Bulgaria is a republic in Southeastern Europe. From 1396 to 1878 Bulgaria was under Turkish rule. It became a kingdom in 1908 and a communist people's republic from 1947 to 1989. Since 1989 Bulgaria has once again been an independent state from the Soviet system and is moving closer to the West. However, progress on economic and social reforms has been slow.

Tourism is an important economic sector. Since the end of the nineties, mass tourism in particular has developed very strongly on the Black Sea coast.

Bulgaria is a member of the EU and NATO.

Climate in Bulgaria

Moderate continental climate. In the winter, Siberian cold air influxes. The Balkan Mountains form a climate barrier and protect the south and southwest from cold spells.

The climate on the Black Sea coast has a Mediterranean profile, but the wind blows across the country mostly from the Black Sea in an easterly direction. As a result, the summers are less warm than in the subtropics and the very rainy winters are milder. From May to September, the temperature usually rises above 20 °C every day. In the coldest month, January, it rarely falls below freezing.

Origin of the country's name

Bulg is a word from ancient Turkic meaning "mixed". The name of the country is derived from the name of the tribe of the Bulgarians, this name probably deriving from the aforementioned Old Turkic word.
