Hungary

Languages spoken in Hungary: Hungarian.

Hungary is located on the northern flank of Southeastern Europe in Central Europe. Hungary used to be a cosmopolitan cultural centre and even during the communist era Hungary was one of the more open countries and people were better off than in other Eastern Bloc countries.

Hungary played a decisive role in the political turnaround of 1989 in the Eastern bloc countries. Since the collapse of the USSR, Hungary has been strongly oriented towards the West, as evidenced by its entry to NATO in 1999 and, above all, to the European Union on 1 May 2004 in the course of the EU's eastward enlargement.

Climate in Hungary

Due to its landlocked location and the shielding effect of the mountains, Hungary has a relatively dry continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The average temperatures are between -3°C and -1°C in January and between +21°C and +23°C in July. The heaviest rainfall is recorded in early summer. The average amount of rainfall in the west is around 800 millimetres due to the prevailing, rain-bringing westerly winds, while in the eastern parts of the country it can fall below 500 millimetres in dry years. The amount of precipitation generally decreases from west to east.

Origin of the country’s name

The neighbouring Slavic peoples referred to the Magyars as Ugri or Ungri. This evolved into Hungary.
