Ireland

Languages spoken in Ireland: Irish.

Ireland is an island nation on the island of the same name, Ireland, which lies in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Britain. Ireland borders the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is a member of the European Union and the Eurozone.

Already settled in the Stone Age, the island of Ireland was known to the Romans as Hibernia. In 1169, the Norman Conquest heralded continued English dominance over Ireland. The centuries-long struggle against English colonialism finally led to the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922.

Ireland, once the "poorhouse" of the EC, is now one of the richest countries in the EU and worldwide after several years of strong growth. The former emigration country is now a popular immigration country because of its strong economy.
