Finnish language

Finnish (or Suomi) is part of the Finnish branch of the Uralic language family. It is not an Indo-European language. Among its closest living relatives are the following languages: Karelian, Veps, Ingrian, Estonian, and the almost extinct Votic (or Votian) and Livonian.

Dialects of Finnish

Finnish has several dialects which are generally divided into Eastern and Western dialects. The eastern group includes the Savonian and Southeast dialects, while the western group includes the Southwest, Midwest, Tavastian, Southern Ostrobothne and Middle and Northern Ostrobothne dialects (Finnish Language Institute).

In addition, there are two main varieties of Finnish, one formal and one informal. Yleiskieli is the formal variety used in church sermons, political speeches and newsreels. Its written form, kirjakieli, is used for most formal writings. It is rarely used in informal writing or on the Internet. Finnish children learn kirjakieli at school. Puhekieli is the informal variety used in everyday life, in most informal situations and in the popular media (Finnish Language Institute)
