Belgium is a federally organized parliamentary monarchy in Western Europe. It borders the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, France and the North Sea.

French Walloons, Dutch-German Flemings and West German Middle Franks live together in the multiethnic state of Belgium. The rest of the resident population consists of immigrants from many parts of Europe (especially Poland and Italy), Morocco and the former colonial territories.

The country was frequently contested in history and occupied by Germany in both world wars. The introduction of a federal structure and national consensus on the benefits of EU membership have somewhat eased existing tensions between Flemings and Walloons.

Belgium is a founding member of the European Union (EU), whose main institutions are located in the capital, Brussels. The Belgian state is also a member of the Benelux Economic Union, along with the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

The Belgian economy is dominated by the service sector, which accounts for about 70%. Despite the country's great industrial tradition, the manufacturing industry still represents only about 15% of the gross domestic product. The most important economic sectors here are the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, as well as the food industry.
Belgium's economy is strongly integrated into the global economy.

Germany is one of Belgium's most important economic partners, along with the Netherlands and France. Finally, Belgium ranks 10th for Germany as a trading partner.
