Geopolitics and current affairs in Saudi Arabia

The image of Prince Muḥammad bin Salmān has been damaged internationally after the death on October 2018 of a Saudi journalist in the consulate of İstanbul. This is in addition to the difficulties of the costly war in Yemen and the lack of success of the economic and social reform plan "Vision 2030".

Boundaries of Saudi Arabia

The country borders with Jordan and Iraq on the North; Kuwait on the Northeast; Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on the Southeast and Oman and Yemen on the South. It faces to the Arabian Gulf on the East and the Red Sea on the West. Behind the Red Sea coast rise a mountainous region. Beyond this there is the desert, sandy in the North (An-Nafūd) and stony in the center (Neged). North of Neged, the plateau descends towards the Arabian Gulf with steep steps at the foot of which springs with densely populated oases line up. The sandy desert of Ar-Rub' al-Khālī extends northeast. The climate is dry.

Form of government

An independent Kingdom created in 1932 from the union of the Kingdoms of Neged (Najd) and Higiaz (Al-Ḥijāz) and the Emirates of 'Asīr, Najrān and Al-Aḥsā'. After the death of the founder 'Abd al-'Azīz (1953), the power by custom passed to their children, from one to another in order of seniority. King Salmān's health has left ample freedom to his son, Muḥammad bin Salmān, Crown Prince since 2017, who has had numerous members of the royal family arrested and promoted sometimes rash initiatives, such as an armed intervention in Yemen. According to the Basic Law (1992), the sovereign, "guardian of the holy places" (Mecca and Medina), holds all powers (legislative, executive and judicial). There is no distinction between royal family assets and state budget. The king is assisted by a consultative assembly of 150 members appointed by him (from 2013 thirty seats are reserved for women). In 2015 the right to vote, exercised only in local elections, was extended to women and the minimum age was lowered to 18 years old. Sunni Islam is the state religion.
