Switzerland (French.  Suisse, ital.   Svizzera, Rhaeto-Roman.   Svizra, lat. Helvetia), officially Swiss Confederation (french. Confédération suisse, ital.   Confederazione Svizzera, Rhaeto-Roman.   Confederaziun svizra, lat. Confoederatio Helvetica), is a landlocked country in central Europe. The country borders Germany to the north, Liechtenstein and Austria to the east, Italy to the south and France to the west.

The Confederation has existed as a loose confederation of states since the 13th century; according to a national myth, it was conjured into existence on the Rütli meadow on 1 August 1291. Switzerland in its present form as a federal state was created with the Federal Constitution of 1848. Since 1979 it has been divided into 26 cantons (constituent states).

Switzerland's foreign policy neutrality has been recognised under international law since the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Today the country is a member of EFTA, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization (since 1995, or since 1959 the predecessor organization GATT), the UN (since 2002), but not the of European Union. Switzerland is one of the economically strongest countries in the world. Three quarters of the workforce are employed in the service sector.

Climate in Switzerland

The Alps of Switzerland act as a climatic divide between the cool temperate climate in the north and the Mediterranean climate in the south. The snow line lies at about 2,500m to 3,300m in the central alpine region. The Föhn is of great regional importance. In Zurich, the average January temperature is -1°C, and the average July temperature is 18°C. The precipitation amounts to 74mm in January and 143mm in July.

Origin of the country’s name

The country name originally applied only to the original canton of Schwyz, which together with two other territories concluded the Eternal Alliance in 1291 - the nucleus of the Swiss Confederation. Since the late Middle Ages, not only the original canton, but the Confederation itself was named Switzerland.
