The United Arab Emirates (abbreviation UAE), is a federation of seven emirates in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula in southwest Asia. They form the only federation in the Arab region. Six of the seven emirates are located in the northeast of the country, only Abu Dhabi has a larger hinterland with desert and isolated oases.
In the cities, there are lush green spaces. In the past, the Emirates' prosperity was based on the pearl trade; today it is based on the export of gas and oil. The UAE has the seventh largest oil reserves in the world, and it is one of the most developed economies in the Middle East. As the end of oil and gas reserves is in sight, the service sector is being expanded.
Climate in UAE
The climate is subtropical to tropical with very low annual rainfall, which mostly falls in winter; often the rain evaporates before it reaches the ground. From May to October it is extremely humid. Especially in winter and early summer the Shamal ("The Northern") blows, a northwest wind that brings a lot of sand and dust. It happens that sandstorms blow from Iraq to the UAE.
In late summer, a humid southeasterly wind called Sharqi ("The Eastern") makes for an unpleasant climate, especially in the coastal region. In the inland there is a dry desert climate. In the Hajar Mountains it is noticeably cooler due to the altitude. On Jebel Jais, a mountain range near Ra's al-Chaima, it has snowed twice since weather records began.
