Hungarian language

Hungarian (Magyar) is a member of the Uralic language family. It is the largest of the Uralic languages in terms of number of speakers and the only one spoken in Central Europe. Its closest relatives are Khanty and Mansi, minority languages in Russia, spoken over 3000 kilometers away, east of the Ural mountains in northwest Siberia. It is estimated that Hungarian split from Khanty and Mansi about 2,500-3,000 years ago.

Linguists believe that the ancestors of modern Hungarians first migrated westward from the eastern slopes of the Ural Mountains to the steppes mountains of southern Russia in the fourth to sixth centuries, and then moved to the Danube basin west of the Carpathians in the ninth century. Over the centuries, Hungarians have been integrated into the surrounding European cultures. Only their language confirms their Asian origin.
