Romanian language

Romanian (Romȃneşte), also called Daco-Romanian or Moldovan, is the easternmost member of the Romance branch of the Indo-European language family. It is the official language of Romania, where it is spoken as a first language by some 19.7 million people.

Romanian is also the official language of Moldova, a former Soviet republic, where it is also known as Moldovan. In Moldova it is spoken by about 3 million people. Unlike Romanian from Romania, which is written in the Latin alphabet, the Moldovan variety used the Cyrillic alphabet until it was officially replaced by the Latin alphabet.

Romanian has been widely disseminated and is spoken in Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation, Serbia, Sweden, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, United States and Uzbekistan. The total number of Slovak speakers worldwide is 26.3 million.

Romanian originated from Vulgar Latin during the 5th and 6th centuries, when the territory that is now Romania belonged to the Roman Empire. During the 7th and 8th centuries, Romanians came into contact with their Slavic-speaking neighbours who had a great influence on their language, religion and culture. It was also influenced by Hungarian, Turkish and Greek.
