Cyprus

Languages spoken in Cyprus: Turkish, Greek.

Cyprus, steeped in history, is located south of Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean. The third largest Mediterranean island (after Sicily and Sardinia) was politically divided in 1974 after a Turkish invasion: To the south is the Greek Cypriot Republic of Cyprus, and to the north is the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), recognized only by Turkey.

Despite its advanced location, Cyprus has traditionally been counted as part of Europe. Cyprus joined the EU on 1 May 2004, but only the Republic of Cyprus. Previously, an attempt to reunify Cyprus in a referendum on 24 April 2004 had failed due to rejection in the Greek part. Cyprus is also home to the two sovereign Royal British bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia
