Mexico (Spanish: México, nahuatl: Mexihco, officially United Mexican States, span: Estados Unidos Mexicanos), is a federal republic in North America comprising 31 states and the capital district of Mexico City.

Mexico borders the United States of America (USA) to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the south and west, Guatemala, Belize and the Caribbean Sea to the southeast, and the Gulf of Mexico to the east.

With a total area of almost two million square kilometers, Mexico is the fifth largest country on the American continent; globally, the country ranks thirteenth. Mexico ranks eleventh in the world with a population of over 120 million people and is the most populous Spanish-speaking country.

The largest part of Mexico is assigned to the North American continent, while the southern part already belongs to the Central American land bridge. The largest part of Mexico (88%) is assigned to the North American continent alone, while the southern part already belongs to the land bridge of Central America (which is also assigned to the North American continent).

Mexico is over 3000 km long and ranges in width from 200 km to 2000 km. In the northwest is the peninsula of Lower California with a length of 1200 km. To the east, the Yucatán Peninsula, which Mexico shares with Guatemala and Belize, juts into the Gulf of Mexico. Mexico spans four time zones.

Mexico is the leading economic power in Latin America. The economy has been heavily deregulated and privatized since the 1990s. The dominance of private companies is growing steadily, and the privatisation of railways, seaports and airports is nearing its end, as is the further privatisation of banks.

The liberalisation of the energy sector continues to progress. Reforms are still pending in the telecommunications and petrochemical sectors.

Central to the modernization of Mexico's economy over the past two decades has been the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which entered into force in 1994. It spurred modernization and initiated Mexico's economic liberalization and continues to map Mexico's major trade flows.

This is because Mexico's most important trading partner by far, both on the export and import side, is the USA. 80% of Mexico's total exports and just under 50% of Mexico's imports are with the US. Therefore, the question of the future economic and trade policy course of the USA after the US election in Mexico is particularly significant.
