A quick overview of the Albanian language

Albanian is an Indo-European language constituting its own branch within the Indo-European family. It has no close relatives. It is spoken by 7.6 million people, mainly in Albania and Kosovo, and in some areas of Italy, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia.

Where does Albanian come from?

Some scholars believe that Albanian comes from illyrian: A group of Indo-European languages that were spoken in the Western Balkans until the 6th century AD. Others believe that Albanian derives from Thracian or Dacian, Indo-European languages spoken in parts of the Balkans until about the 5th century AD.

Linguistic influences

Albanian absorbed some Greek and many Latin words between the second century BC and the fifth century AD. It was later influenced by the languages of the Slavic and Germanic tribes that settled in the Balkans. It also received loan words from the pre-Roman or Vlachs in the ninth century AD.
